Orthopedics FAQ

The idea of pet surgery can cause a lot of anxiety. You might have a lot of questions about orthopedics for your pet. At Boulevard Veterinary Hospital in Glen and Lancaster, CA, we can answer all the frequently asked questions about orthopedics and surgery. Following are the answers to several questions our veterinarian frequently receives regarding orthopedics.

What is Orthopedic Surgery?

Orthopedic surgery involves repairing a fractured bone or joint. A lot of the cases are minimally invasive, and lasers are used a lot of the time. We may use general anesthesia to keep your pet calm during the procedure if more invasive surgery is being conducted.

What Should I Expect Before and After the Surgery?

Before the surgery date, a veterinarian on our staff will explain the process to you to know what to expect. Your pet will undergo a comprehensive exam, and blood work will be completed. After the procedure, your pet will be kept under observation to prevent complications. We will usually send pain medication home with you, and your pet will need to do rehabilitation for about six weeks.

How do I Know if My Pet Needs Orthopedic Treatment?

Your pet may be suffering from limited mobility and pain that only surgery can correct. However, orthopedic surgery is complex, and your pet may not be a good candidate. We will evaluate your pet's condition at our office. We will work closely with you to determine the best options moving forward.
